About A K Nandy

Early Life

In the latter half of the seventh decade of the last century, a new-born baby arrived on the earth, bringing hope and radiance to the Nandy family of Dharmanagar, Tripura (N). None could foresee that this innocent child, whose playful attempts at creating “something from nothing” with a soft toy amused everyone, would one day become one of the foremost entertainers of India. With time, this gifted soul would mesmerize countless spectators, building a legacy of wonder as A. K. Nandy, The Magician.

At the tender age of five, young Nandy witnessed a grand magic show by the legendary P. C. Sorcar (Jr.). The colourful world of illusions, the majestic stage presence, and the ethereal charm of Sorcar’s performance left the little boy spellbound. That magical evening transformed his tender heart and awakened within him a burning passion for the art of magic. From that moment onward, he resolved that after completing his academic education, he would become a successful professional magician.

Growing Years-Intoduction to Magic

Life, however, was neither easy nor luxurious. Born into a modest family struggling against poverty, Nandy faced hardship from childhood. The greatest blow came when he lost his father at a very young age, placing upon his youthful shoulders the full burden of family responsibilities. Yet, armed with unyielding courage, deep faith in the Almighty, and immense self-belief, he rose above every difficulty—slowly but steadily.

Though financial constraints could not prevent him from pursuing further studies in the great art of magic, his thirst for knowledge never ceased. Intelligent, observant, and self-motivated, he educated himself through books, experience, and relentless practice, developing a pleasing personality and a disciplined mind.

When Nandy was a student of Class Eight, destiny brought him to the door of the celebrated magician of Tripura, Dee Murari, a resident of his hometown. Dee Murari began teaching the young boy the classical foundations of magic in a systematic, chronological manner. Over time, Murari became not just a mentor but a friend, philosopher, and guide, shaping Nandy’s artistic spirit. Dee Murari, besides being an accomplished magician, was also a highly educated and sensitive artist deeply versed in diverse classical art forms.

The Arrival of the Magician

As Nandy progressed, he later met some of the greatest magical personalities of the country:

  • The great illusionist N. C. Sharma
  • Magician D. Subhash
  • Illusionist D. N. Gopal
  • Shri Gora Dutta, a towering figure in creative magic

From these icons, A. K. Nandy learned profound aspects of magical performance and stagecraft. He remains heartfully grateful to Magician N. C. Sharma, who inspired him to become a creative stage illusion maker. The eminent magic author Gora Dutta enriched him further by introducing him to the vast and scholarly literature on the art of magic.
